Nowy Wiśnicz
Kamień Grzyb is a small reserve in the Wiśnicz Foothills, established in 1962 on an area of 1.83 hectares. It lies on the northern slope of Bukowiec hill (380 m above sea level), in a hollow carved by erosion, in the village of Połom Duży in the Bochnia district. It protects a group of rocks built of Istebna sandstone and the surrounding patch of Carpathian beech forest.
The main attraction is the largest rock, about 7 metres high and topped with a wide overhang that gives it the shape of a mushroom. The form arose because harder sandstone layers resisted weathering longer than the softer base. Beside the rock lies a stone slab with carved Latin names and dates, linked to monks from the Carmelite monastery in Nowy Wiśnicz.
The reserve is reached by the blue trail from Nowy Wiśnicz — the route is about 3 kilometres long and takes roughly an hour one way. A local legend says the stone was dropped here by the devil when he failed to destroy the Wiśnicz monastery.
