Jaworzno
The Sasanki reserve lies in the northern part of Jaworzno, by the road from the town centre to Szczakowa, and covers 13.56 hectares on the south-eastern slopes of Sodowa Góra. It was created in 1981 to protect a natural site of the eastern pasque flower — the next one in this part of the region is only found near Olkusz. The area is covered by pine and larch woodland several decades old.
In the late 1990s a drastic fall in the number of the protected plant was recorded here. The main cause was trampling of the undergrowth by careless visitors — the inconspicuous clumps are easy to miss outside the flowering season. This led to the disappearance of the species from the reserve itself, although the area remained protected.
Where the old stands used to be there is now the Sasanka natural monument: several dozen clumps growing on two separate plots inside the woodland. The site is fenced and clearly marked, so it can be seen without stepping into the undergrowth. It is a good example of species protection right next to urban development.
