Wieś Mukrz
Cisy Staropolskie, named after Leon Wyczółkowski, lies in Wierzchlas by Lake Mukrz, on the south-eastern edge of the Tuchola Forest. The site was placed under protection as early as 1827, which makes it the oldest reserve in the country. On nearly 114 hectares grow more than 3,500 common yews — the largest such stand in Poland.
The most impressive specimen, called the Chrobry Yew, is about 650 years old. It was named by Leon Wyczółkowski, who described the yew forest as a sacred grove and painted over a hundred works here; the reserve was later named after him. The yews grow in the shade of beeches and pines, forming a dense, shadowy undergrowth.
Besides the yews, other protected species can be found here: mezereon, broad-leaved helleborine and martagon lily. Visiting follows a marked route, partly along the shore of Lake Mukrz, which brings variety after the forest section. A car park has been arranged right by the reserve, so getting here by car is easy.
