A boardwalk across the Biebrza marshes

An educational trail in Biebrza National Park, skirting the wildest and oldest part of the protected area. The strict Czerwone Bagno reserve itself stays closed to visitors, but the route shows the same landscape at close range. It starts at the Grzędy forester's lodge, near the village of Kuligi.

The route

A wooden boardwalk runs for about a kilometre through boggy coniferous forest and peatland to a viewing platform. You return the same way, so allow roughly an hour for the whole walk. Spruces, alder carrs and willows line the path, and a dead pine that locals call the holy pine stands right at the entrance.

Good to know

This is one of the better places to watch birds and wildlife — slowly and quietly. The Czerwone Bagno area once sheltered insurgents and partisan units. The boardwalk is narrow and not suitable for pushchairs.
