Grodziec, Będzin
Góra Świętej Doroty rises to 382 m above sea level on the Katowice Upland and is the highest elevation in Będzin. Locally it is also called the Golden Hill, Mount Tabor or the Olympus of Zagłębie. Its gentle slopes and summit are covered with lush vegetation, from beneath which traces of old fortifications emerge in places.
Excavations indicate that as early as the Lusatian culture there was a hillfort here with a pagan place of worship, surrounded by a defensive rampart; its remains can still be made out today. On the summit stands the historic church of St Dorothy, erected in 1635 and still a destination for pilgrimages.
The hill offers a broad panorama of the Zagłębie region and Upper Silesia, clearest outside the growing season. Apart from the summit area, the site is protected as an area of protected landscape, where the most valuable features are remnants of xerothermic grasslands. The Polish Hussars Trail and the European Via Regia route both pass across the hill.
