Żabie Doły is a nature and landscape complex of more than 226 ha, spread across the boundary of Chorzów, Bytom and Piekary Śląskie. The scenery was shaped by mining: subsidence hollows, spoil heaps and the former flotation ponds of the Barbara-Chorzów colliery gradually became overgrown and turned into a mosaic of pools, reed beds and thickets.
The site is one of the best birdwatching spots in Upper Silesia — close to 130 species have been recorded here, along with a dozen or so snail species and nine amphibians. Six hides set along the water bodies and the same number of bridges with interpretive boards serve visitors.
A network of walking and cycling paths with a mineral-resin surface lets you loop around the ponds without stepping onto public roads. The trademark of the place is the green frog mural painted on the viaduct pillars. The area lies between roads 79 and 94, and the easiest place to leave a vehicle is by Dolina Górnika.
