Krzywy Las is a small patch of woodland of about 1.7 ha next to the village of Nowe Czarnowo, close to the Dolna Odra power plant. It holds around a hundred Scots pines whose trunks bend just above the ground at almost a right angle, only to return to the vertical a few metres further on. The trees were planted in the 1930s and the grove is protected as a natural monument.
The most commonly repeated theory points to deliberate human action: young pines were trained into so-called curved timber, used in carpentry and boatbuilding for parts with a natural arc. The war interrupted the practice and the trees were left to grow on. Natural causes are also considered, such as heavy snowfall or damage to the young shoots.
Walking around the grove takes a quarter of an hour, and the pattern of the trunks is best seen from the middle. Access is from Gryfino along the road towards Chojna, then a turn towards Nowe Czarnowo; the final stretch is a field track running along a heating pipeline.
