Wieś Górecko Stare
Szum Nature Reserve lies in the Lublin region, in the buffer zone of Roztocze National Park near the village of Górecko Stare. Established in 1958, it covers just under 17 ha of a valley where the Szum river cuts through the escarpment zone of Central Roztocze. It is one of the most scenic river sections in the region.
On hard rock steps the river forms a series of small waterfalls and rapids, which gave rise to the local name szumy. The valley slopes are covered with fir and beech woods, and the undergrowth holds protected species, among them goat's beard, umbellate wintergreen and round-leaved sundew.
The red escarpment trail runs through the reserve, together with two educational paths that keep close to the riverbed. Walking the whole gorge takes about an hour; in places the route drops steeply to the water and can be slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is useful.
