A faunal nature reserve created in 1957 on the Vistula Spit, inside the Mierzeja Wiślana Landscape Park and the Natura 2000 site covering the Vistula Lagoon and the spit. It originally took in under 11 hectares; in 2000 it was enlarged to almost 63 hectares.
The heart of the reserve is a cormorant breeding colony — the largest in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. Grey herons nest here too. The birds benefit from the absence of natural predators and from the fish-rich waters of the lagoon and the nearby lakes. Sand sedge growing on the dunes is protected as well.
Pines make up most of the tree stand and slowly die back under the birds' droppings; new trees are planted to replace them. Those bare crowns are the signature sight of the place. Visiting follows designated tracks over sandy ground.
