ul. Karczówkowska, Kielce
Karczówka is a landscape reserve in the western part of Kielce, established in 1953. It covers over 26 hectares of a wooded hill 340 metres high, excluding the summit itself and the northern slope. Protection was extended to the pine forest that forms the setting of a historic seventeenth-century monastery.
The hill is built of Devonian organogenic limestone which once held rich lead ores. Former mining left clear traces: sinkholes where shafts stood, spoil heaps and crevices, the largest of them about four hundred metres long. The oldest pines in the reserve have passed one hundred and eighty years.
A marked educational trail with nine stops and boards explaining the geology and the history of mining runs across the area. The walk takes under an hour. Karczówkowska Street leads here from the centre of Kielce, an approach of about two kilometres.
