The halophyte reserve in Ciechocinek protects barely two hectares in the Toruń Basin, by the so-called back embankment and close to graduation tower number three. It was established in 1963 to preserve a rich community of salt-loving plants. The area is under active protection.
The vegetation is arranged in zones according to the salinity of the ground. Salt reaches the soil in two ways: through brine seeping up from below and through fine crystals settling from the air around the graduation towers. The result is a halophyte community rare inland, typical rather of sea coasts, developed in the middle of a spa town.
No paths have been laid out in the reserve, but the successive vegetation zones can be followed along the brine ditch, and a red hiking trail runs along the edge of the area. A visit takes half an hour and combines well with a walk around the graduation tower park. The vegetation is low and fragile, so do not enter the swards.
