ul. Wojska Polskiego, Kielce
The Zbigniew Rubinowski Wietrznia inanimate nature reserve occupies a former quarry in the eastern part of Kielce, off Wojska Polskiego Street. Established in 1999, it covers 17.59 hectares taking in the Wietrznia and Międzygórze hills, which reach 312 metres above sea level.
The quarry walls expose Devonian limestones with a rich fossil fauna — rugose corals and siliceous sponges. Tectonic structures, vein mineralisation and karst forms are all visible: sinkholes, fissures and caves, foremost among them the Wietrznia Cave. In the northern part of the old workings a pond has formed, placed under strict protection.
The reserve is part of the Kielce Geopark, and at its foot stands the Centre of Geoeducation, whose exhibition explains the geology of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains — a good complement to a walk with children. A green walking trail crosses the site from Zamkowa Street to Bukówka. The quarry edges are steep, so keep to the marked paths.
