The Meteorite Morasko reserve covers over 54 hectares of woodland and landscape in the northern part of Poznań. It was created in 1976 and its hallmark is a group of depressions regarded as craters left by the fall of an iron meteorite several thousand years ago.
There are six craters; the largest is about ninety metres across and more than ten metres deep. All are filled with water that holds no fish but plenty of amphibians: fire-bellied toad, pool frog, edible frog, moor frog and common spadefoot. In summer a thick layer of duckweed covers the surface. Around them grows an oak and hornbeam forest with martagon lily in the undergrowth.
A nature education trail runs through the reserve and walking around the craters takes about half an hour. By car take Meteorytowa Street, where there is a car park at the entrance; a city bus also serves the area. The origin of the depressions is still debated, with some researchers linking them to the ice sheet.
