Siekierki, Krynica Morska
The Buki Mierzei Wiślanej reserve takes in seven hectares of forest within Krynica Morska, on the dune ridge of the Vistula Spit. It was created in 1962 to preserve the only natural beech stand in this area. Beech woods once covered large parts of the spit; today only single patches remain.
The oldest beeches are around two hundred years old and grow on steep dune slopes, which gives the interior of the wood an unusual character. Norway spruce, Scots pine, silver birch and pedunculate oak grow among them. Common ivy climbs abundantly on the trunks, and eighty-two species of lichen have been recorded in the reserve.
This is a short but demanding walk: the ground is undulating and the sandy climbs can be tiring. The reserve lies by Wiejska Street in Krynica Morska and can be combined with a visit to the dunes or the beach. An hour is enough to cross the most interesting part of the stand.
