Karst springs in Tomaszów Mazowiecki

Niebieskie Źródła is a landscape nature reserve of about 29 hectares in the south-eastern part of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, in the valley of the Pilica river. It protects a group of karst springs feeding shallow pools and oxbow lakes — one of the best-known natural sites in the Łódź region.

Where the blue comes from

The colour that gives the reserve its name comes from no pigment at all. The calcareous water absorbs the red part of the spectrum while transmitting and reflecting blue and green wavelengths; the effect is heightened by light scattering on grains of sand lifted from the bottom by the rising water. It shows most strongly on sunny days.

A walk through the reserve

Several educational paths with information boards and boardwalks over the water run around the pools; the full loop takes less than an hour and is easy even with a pushchair. Nearly 400 species of vascular plants have been recorded here, including the protected white water lily and holy grass.
