Wyspa Sobieszewska, Gdańsk
Mewia Łacha is a faunal nature reserve on the Gdańsk coast, covering the mouth of the Vistula Cut. Established in 1991, it spans 150.46 hectares divided into a Gdańsk section on the left bank (18.91 hectares) and a larger eastern section (131.55 hectares). The area is part of the Natura 2000 network.
Protection covers tern breeding grounds along with feeding and resting sites for waders and waterfowl. The sandwich tern nests here — since 2007 the only Polish colony of the species — while migration brings Europe's largest concentrations of little gull and common gull, plus flocks of dunlin. Grey seals and harbour seals haul out on the sandbanks.
Movement is allowed only along the marked paths from Sobieszewo Island and Mikoszewo; during the breeding season part of the beach may be closed, and volunteers keep watch near the seals to maintain a safe distance. Bring binoculars, since observation is done from a distance.
