Droga Helska, Hel
Puck Bay and the Hel Peninsula form one of the most valuable natural stretches of the Polish coast, protected within the Natura 2000 network. The shallow waters, sheltered by the sand spit, favour underwater meadows that cover about a quarter of the bay.
The characteristic species here is eelgrass, and alongside it thirteen habitat types of European importance have been recorded, including coastal salt marshes, white dunes and marine shellfish banks. The bay remains an important refuge for waterbirds: grebes, mute and whooper swans and common pochards. With a little luck you may spot a harbour porpoise or a grey seal. Part of the area belongs to the Beka nature reserve.
The peninsula is a narrow strip of sand running from Władysławowo to Hel, followed by a road, a railway line and a popular cycling route. Dune and salt-marsh habitats are easily damaged by trampling, so use only the marked paths down to the beach.
