Skarżysko-Kamienna
Wykus is a nature reserve of just under 64 hectares protecting a natural mixed coniferous forest. The woodland covers a hill 326 metres high and descends its slopes towards the river Lubianka. The stand is estimated at around one hundred years old and includes pines, spruces, firs and sessile oaks.
Above all, Wykus is a symbol of the struggle for independence. The extensive forests sheltered the insurgents of the January Uprising and, during the Second World War, partisan units. A chapel commemorating the fighters stands in a forest clearing, and unmarked graves can be found in the woods nearby.
The reserve lies between the S7 expressway and road no. 42, south of the Sieradowice Landscape Park. On foot it is reached by the green trail from Skarżysko-Kamienna, the blue trail from Wąchock and Bodzentyn, and the black trail from Starachowice. The routes follow forest tracks, steep in places.
