Świeradów-Zdrój
The peat bogs of the Izera Mountains are protected by the Izera Valley Peat Bogs Reserve — one of the largest areas of its kind in Poland, covering more than 500 hectares. It lies in Lower Silesia, right on the Czech border, around the broad Izera Meadow enclosed by gentle hills.
These are raised and transitional bogs, similar in structure to those found in northern Europe, especially Scandinavia. The largest patches occupy the valley of the Izera River. Their formation goes back to the end of the last ice age, so the deepest layers of peat are more than eleven thousand years old.
The ground is covered with peat mosses, sundews, sedges and cottongrass — plants adapted to a poor, acidic substrate. In the north-eastern part of the reserve an educational trail with eight information stations has been laid out. Access leads either from Świeradów-Zdrój or from the mountain hut on Stóg Izerski.
