Eksperymentarium in Chojnice is a small but carefully designed science centre where the region is told through experience rather than information boards. It has been open since 2015, created on the initiative and with the funds of the Chojnice district. The town lies at the gateway to the Tuchola Forest, which explains the theme of the exhibition well — its protagonists are the nature, history and culture of this part of Pomerania.
The leading thread of the exhibition is the coexistence of people and nature over the centuries: how people used the forest and the water, what followed from that for the landscape and what remains of those relations today.
The exhibition consists of thirteen interactive stations. Each of them allows you to approach the subject differently — by hand, through the senses or through a puzzle to solve. Visitors do not only look, they also operate devices, compare sounds and textures and test simple natural phenomena.
Apart from the permanent exhibition, Eksperymentarium runs workshops, meetings and popular science lectures. The programme tends to be cyclical, so it is worth checking the current dates before a visit.
This is above all a suggestion for families with children and school groups, though the exhibition is universal enough for adults to find something for themselves too. The display is housed indoors, so it works in any weather — a good idea for a rainy afternoon in the Tuchola Forest. The space is accessible for prams and wheelchairs.
Chojnice itself deserves a walk: the preserved layout of the old town, fragments of the defensive walls with the Człuchowska Gate and the market square with the town hall form a compact route for an hour or two. Further on begins the land of lakes and trails of the Tuchola Forest.
