The Hortulus Gardens in Dobrzyca near Koszalin hold the northernmost dendrological collection in Poland. Their best known part is a one-hectare hornbeam labyrinth, opened to visitors in 2014, together with the viewing tower standing at its centre.
The corridors run to a combined length of 3.2 km and the hedge walls reach two metres, which makes finding your bearings genuinely difficult. From the tower a garden employee keeps watch over visitors and points the way to those who get stuck. Working through the maze usually takes several dozen minutes.
The structure measures 19.1 m and its main terrace sits at a height of 18 metres. The view takes in the entire pattern of the labyrinth and the surrounding garden quarters. The shape of the tower was designed as a reference to the DNA double helix. Dobrzyca is most easily reached from national road 11 running from Koszalin towards Kołobrzeg or from road 6; free parking adjoins the gardens.
