A mining technology park in Złoty Stok

The Medieval Mining Settlement is an open-air exhibition next to the gold mine in Złoty Stok, at the foot of the Golden Mountains. It gathers reconstructions of the machines used for centuries to extract and haul ore: a hand crane, a whim once driven by horses and a treadwheel. The devices were rebuilt at 1:1 scale — the whim measures about 15 metres and the treadwheel nearly 3 metres.

What to see

The route leads between the machines to an underground tunnel kept in a dark setting and ending at the Executioner's Hut. Along the way there is a fright trail and further elements showing the realities of historic mining. The settlement complements a visit to the neighbouring Gold Mine, so both parts are worth planning for the same day.

Who it suits

The exhibition combines education with entertainment and works well for family visits — children learn how hard the work of miners and of the women and children employed in extraction really was. The grounds are suitable for pushchairs.

  • Car park by the mine complex
  • Ticket office and souvenir shop
  • Refreshment point
  • Paths accessible for pushchairs
Visit duration: approx. 1 hour Seasonality: Open all year
