Gdańsk Zoo covers about 123 hectares of a wooded valley in the Oliwa district, on Karwieńska street. In terms of area it is the largest zoological garden in the country — the animals are seen during a long walk among hills and trees rather than in a cramped city park.
The collection holds around two hundred species from all over the world. There are lions, Amur tigers, orangutans and chimpanzees, penguins, as well as rarities such as the scimitar-horned oryx, extinct in the wild, and the lowland anoa — a small buffalo from Sulawesi kept by no other Polish zoo.
Children head first for the Little Zoo, where tame animals can be touched and fed, and then for the dinosaur park and the rope park. Given the vast, hilly grounds it is worth allowing at least two hours and wearing comfortable shoes. Several food outlets and souvenir shops operate on site, and the zoo lies close to the S6 expressway.
