A zoological garden in the Wolski Forest

The Cracow zoo lies in the Wolski Forest west of the city centre and covers about seventeen hectares. The tradition of keeping exotic animals here goes back to the days of the royal court at Wawel, and today the garden presents close to 270 species from all over the world.

The residents

Among the animals are Indian elephants, hippopotamuses, camels, tapirs and flamingos, as well as big cats: lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards. Lemurs and meerkats draw a lot of attention. For children there is a mini zoo with rabbits, pot-bellied pigs, dwarf goats and Chinese muntjacs.

Good to know

The garden belongs to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, which means it takes part in breeding programmes for endangered species. The approach runs along aleja Kasy Oszczędności Miasta Krakowa through the forest, and the visit is easy to combine with a walk up to the Piłsudski Mound.
