Tykocin
Pentowo is a small hamlet near Tykocin, on the edge of the Narew wetlands. Around a historic manor house and its old trees one of the largest white stork colonies in Poland has taken shape — the nests occupy the crowns of dead trees, roofs and poles right beside the buildings.
In 2001 the German foundation EuroNatur granted the place the title of European Stork Village — the only site so honoured in Poland. The title goes to villages where human farming and the presence of storks have settled into a lasting balance.
The storks occupy their nests from late March; the most rewarding months are May and June, when chicks sit in the nests, and August, when the birds gather before migrating. Outside the breeding season the place loses its main attraction. The visit combines well with a walk around Tykocin — with its baroque church and 17th-century synagogue — and a trip to the Narew National Park.
