Płock Zoo is laid out on the high Vistula escarpment, minutes from Tum Hill and the old town. The setting gives it a rare advantage: the view over the river valley accompanies almost the whole visit. The institution consistently focuses on the protection of endangered species.
The collection covers some 580 species, including animals rarely kept in Polish zoos: Persian leopards, pygmy hippos, snow leopards, red pandas and Indian elephants. The reptile and amphibian section is extensive, while among mammals the meerkat enclosure and the monkeys — tamarins and marmosets — draw most attention.
Many animals arrive through European breeding programmes for threatened species, and since 2002 the garden has belonged to the world association of zoos and aquariums. Seeing the whole site takes about two hours; the paths are surfaced and passable with a pushchair, while dogs may not be brought in.
