A former sandstone quarry

The Babia Dolina quarry lies on the edge of Józefów, in the heart of Central Roztocze. Tertiary limestone and sandstone were extracted here and used to build local houses, wayside shrines and the well-known Józefów gravestones. The pit is no longer worked, but the exposed rock faces remain — pale, distinctly layered and several metres high in places.

Fossils and footprints

A walk across the quarry floor is an open-air geology lesson. In the sandstone blocks you can easily spot shells and other fossils millions of years old, while some slabs preserve the imprints of prehistoric animal tracks. Children find it fascinating, though it is worth keeping them away from the edges of the walls.

The tower and the surroundings

On the neighbouring hill stands a viewing tower built in 2011, nineteen metres tall. From the platform at fifteen metres a panorama of Józefów and the wooded hills of Roztocze opens up. An old Jewish cemetery lies nearby, and a red geotourist trail leads here from the centre of town — a walk of less than a kilometre.
