Wieś Podzamcze
Skalne Miasto Podzamcza is a group of more than a dozen limestone tors forming a natural labyrinth at the foot of Ogrodzieniec Castle, in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The rocks rise on Góra Janowskiego, the highest hill of the Polish Jura at 516 metres above sea level, and have been sculpted into fanciful shapes by water and frost over millennia.
The best known are two adjacent rocks: Sfinks (the Sphinx) and Lalka (the Doll), captured in thousands of photographs. Nearby stand Niedźwiedź (the Bear), Wielbłąd (the Camel) and Okiennik — the names come from shapes that are easy to recognise from the right spot. The limestone walls are also a popular climbing ground with many routes of varying difficulty.
The most pleasant approach is the nature trail starting below the castle in Podzamcze. The route is short but keeps revealing new views of the ruins and the surrounding hills. The ground is stony and steep in places, so sturdy shoes help; with small children it is worth sticking to the main path, as narrow clefts and drops lurk between the tors.
