A viewpoint above the San

Chmielowe Kaskady is a viewpoint in the San valley, just before the village of Chmiel in the Bieszczady Mountains. Platforms secured with railings have been built on the high bank, and from them you look down on a gorge section of the largest river in the range. A car park adjoins the site.

What you can see

The San runs here through a bed broken up by rock steps. Depending on the water level, small but striking cascades form on them — at their best after rain and during the thaw. From the platforms you can also make out a small island in the river and the wooded slopes dropping into the valley. A short stop is enough.

Getting there

The viewpoint sits by the road to Zatwarnica. Coming along the Great Bieszczady Loop, turn west towards Smolnik and Procisne and then follow the signs to Chmiel. The road is surfaced but narrow, with few places to turn around, so it is worth planning the stop in advance.
