Karpacz
Słonecznik is a granite formation in the Karkonosze Mountains, rising above Karpacz Górny. The tor stands about 12.5 metres high and is the range's most visible rock from the town. It lies on a ridge, in the area of the trails leading towards the main crest of the Karkonosze.
From the foot of the rock a wide panorama of the Jelenia Góra Valley and the surrounding ridges opens up. One of the blocks resembles a human figure — it was once believed that the Spirit of the Mountains, Liczyrzepa, lived here, hence the older name Nest of the Spirit of the Mountains. The present one comes from the rock marking noon for the people of Podgórze, when the sun stood highest above it.
From Karpacz the route to Słonecznik follows first the blue and then the green trail; it is about 4.3 km long and the ascent takes roughly two hours and fifteen minutes. The path is stony and steep, so proper boots are advisable. Returning the same way, or continuing along the ridge, makes it a half-day trip.
