Miasteczko Śląskie
The flooded Bibiela mine lies in the woods between Miasteczko Śląskie and the Zielona reservoir, in the Tarnowskie Góry district. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it was one of the most productive iron ore mines in this part of Europe and employed around seven hundred people. Today only ruins and several small lakes remain.
The mine had four shafts: Neptun, Nordstern, Glück Auf and Klemens. From the outset it struggled with inflowing water, until in 1917 it was completely flooded. The cause was the neighbouring underground reservoir Lubliniec-Myszków, which today supplies Tarnowskie Góry with water.
The pools in the old workings have distinctly different colours, depending on the iron compounds dissolved in the water. Benches and a board describing the history of the mine stand around them. A yellow cycling trail leads here from Miasteczko Śląskie; the walk takes about an hour and a half.
