Piechowice
The rock tunnel sits on the road linking Piechowice with Michałowice, in the western part of the Jelenia Góra Basin. The passage was cut through solid granite so that the narrow mountain road could cross the rock step instead of going around it. The tunnel is only a few metres long, yet it impresses with its rough, unlined interior and a bore wide enough for a single vehicle.
Few road tunnels of this kind survive in Poland, and this one is among the best known in the Karkonosze region. A visit amounts to a short stop and a few photographs, which makes it an easy addition to a drive around the nearby valleys. Moss covers the rock walls and a wooded slope rises above the portal.
The road here is winding and narrow with limited visibility, so the approach calls for care, especially in a longer vehicle. Two parking spaces have been arranged beside the tunnel, allowing a safe stop and a close look at the passage.
