Wieś Niegowonice
Kromołowiec is a wooded hill of 431 m above sea level, lying on the edge of the village of Niegowonice in the Zawiercie district, Silesian Voivodeship. It belongs to the landscape of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, where limestone tors stand out above gentle farmland.
Despite its modest relative height, the hill serves as a convenient viewpoint — the climb to the top takes only about a quarter of an hour.
From the open spots on the summit ridge you can see the Błędów Desert and, when the air is clear, the area of Rabsztyn and Ogrodzieniec with the silhouettes of the Jurassic strongholds. It is one of the few places nearby where the sandy expanse of the desert and the belt of the Jura can be taken in at a single glance.
Numerous limestone tors are scattered across the summit and the slopes, and within them lie cave features: Jaskinia Zawaliskowa, Okap w Kamieniołomie, Schronisko pod Płytami and Schronisko w Niegowonicach. These are small forms typical of the Jura — rock shelters and short passages rather than extensive systems; exploring them calls for care and your own light source.
The hill is covered with mixed forest. In summer bilberries ripen on the slopes, and in autumn the area is popular with mushroom pickers.
Kromołowiec lies right beside regional road no. 790, with a car park at the foot of the hill — a convenient stop for a short break on a trip through the Jura. The paths to the top are earthen and rooty, they can be slippery after rain, and near the rock fissures the uneven ground calls for attention.
