The Spad waterfall lies on the Kamienica Gorczańska river in Szczawa, Limanowa County, at about 590 m above sea level. It is barely 2.2 m high, yet it is considered the largest waterfall in the Beskids — not because of the height of the step, but because of the volume of water passing over it. The stream splits here into two jets.
The step of the waterfall is formed by a bed of hard Magura sandstone, resistant to erosion. Below it the water has carved out plunge pools and deeper stretches, while smoothed boulders fill the channel above. The place shows well how a mountain stream works on rock — most spectacularly after the thaw and after heavier rainfall.
The waterfall stands beside the stretch of road no. 968 from Mszana Górna to Zabrzeż, so getting there is easy: from the Bukówka car park you cross the bridge and head towards the housing estate to a second bridge. Szczawa makes a good base for trips into the Gorce mountains and the Gorce National Park.
