Karpacz
Skały Pielgrzymy are one of the best-known rock groups in the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains). They stand at about 1204 metres above sea level, in the eastern part of the Silesian Ridge on the slope of Smogornia, in the Karpacz area of Lower Silesia. They consist of three massive rock masses and several isolated blocks, recognisable from a considerable distance.
They are built of Karkonosze granite in its porphyritic variety. Their surfaces clearly show the effects of long weathering: deep fissures, weathering pans that fill with water after rain, and the characteristic mattress forms dividing the rock into horizontal slabs. This is one of the finest examples in the range of how climate shapes granite.
Three routes lead to the rocks. From the Wang Church in Karpacz via Polana it is about 3.2 km, or one to one and a half hours. From the Karkonoska Pass the green trail runs through the Smogornia cirque — 4.8 km. The shortest and easiest option, suitable for children, is the yellow trail from Słonecznik, just 1.2 km long.
