Wieś Rutka
Głazowisko Rutka lies in the village of Rutka in the Suwałki region, at about 235 m above sea level. The reserve was established in 2001 and covers 49 hectares. It protects an extensive glacial boulder pavement together with Lake Linówek and the adjoining transitional peat bog.
The concentration of erratics was left here by the ice sheet retreating some twelve thousand years ago. The stones lie on flat, open ground still used as pasture — grazing keeps the landscape from becoming overgrown and preserves its raw, original character.
Two educational routes run through the reserve: „Lichens” and „Rocks and minerals of the Suwałki Landscape Park”. The first introduces the species growing on the boulder surfaces, the second explains the origin of the rocks and the geological structure of the region. Walking both trails gives a good introduction to understanding the post-glacial landscape of the Suwałki region.
