An unusual orchard in the heart of a national park

The forest orchard in Jerzykowice Wielkie is one of only a handful of such plantings in Poland. It lies in the Stołowe Mountains National Park, in its south-western part, in the Jeleniów protection district, in the Kłodzko county. Instead of neat rows of fruit trees you will find old varieties growing freely across a forest clearing.

The site lies away from the main routes of the Stołowe Mountains, which is why it has kept its intimate character.

Why it was created

The orchard was established gradually between 1999 and 2006 in order to preserve the old varieties of fruit trees once grown in this part of the Sudetes: apple, pear, sour cherry, sweet cherry and walnut. Foresters kept planting further trees, creating a living gene bank of regional varieties.

Such places also have a historical dimension — they recall the former farms that stood on these slopes before 1945 and of which little more than the landscape remains today.

What you will find there

A clearing with scattered fruit trees surrounded by forest, with a view of the neighbouring hills. Spring is worth choosing for the blossom, autumn for the leaf colours and the ripening fruit. The place is quiet and free of the crowds that gather on Szczeliniec or in Błędne Skały.

Remember that the orchard is part of a national park rather than a commercial plantation — the fruit is left for wild animals.

Access

The orchard is reached by the green hiking trail running from Kudowa-Zdrój towards Krucza Kopa. The walk is a calm forest hike with moderate ascents. National park rules apply, including the obligation to keep to the marked trails.
