Szczebrzeszyn
The loess gorges in Szczebrzeszyn form one of the most recognisable landscapes of the Roztocze region in Lublin Province. A thick layer of loess, easily washed away by water, has been carved over centuries into a network of deep, narrow ravines. The walls reach a dozen or more metres and are closed overhead by a canopy of trees.
The easiest access is from the town centre along Cmentarna Street. The area is crossed by the red Partisan Trail, the blue Central Roztocze Hiking Trail and a black Nordic walking route. A longer option is the Szczebrzeszyn – Kawęczynek educational path of about twelve kilometres: on foot it takes just under four hours, by bike considerably less.
The most atmospheric section is called Piekiełko Szczebrzeszyńskie, the little hell. The ground is clayey and becomes very slippery after rain, so dry weather is the better choice. The town itself, with its monument to a beetle, is worth saving for the end of the walk.
