The Papal Gorge (Wąwóz Papieski) is an educational trail running along the floor of a disused quarry at the foot of Mount Wdżar in Kluszkowce, Czorsztyn commune. It starts by the Czorsztyn-Ski resort, from where a chairlift also runs higher up in the summer season. Walking it one way takes about half an hour.
The name commemorates a mass celebrated in the abandoned quarry by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II. The site has kept the raw character of a working pit: vertical walls, loose rubble and exposed rock faces recall the former stone extraction.
Wdżar is built of rocks of volcanic origin, which is linked to the magnetic anomaly recorded in this area. From its slopes a panorama opens onto the Tatras, the Pieniny Mountains and Lake Czorsztyńskie. The route is narrow, steep and muddy in places, so sure footwear is needed.
