ul. Małachowskiego, Kazimierz Dolny
Wąwóz Małachowskiego is one of the best-known loess gorges in Kazimierz Dolny, in the Land of Loess Gorges on the Lublin Upland. A narrow ravine cut into soft rock, with vertical walls laced with tree roots, it runs just outside the town centre. The entrance leads from Nadrzeczna Street or from the neighbouring Plebanka gorge.
The gorge is named after Juliusz Małachowski, commander of the Sandomierz Rifle Battalion, who fell here during the November Uprising in 1831 while defending Kazimierz Dolny against Russian troops. A stone plaque set in the gorge commemorates the event.
Walking through takes well under an hour and needs no preparation, though the bottom can be muddy after rain. It is worth combining with the nearby gorges – Korzeniowy Dół, Norowy Dół and Plebanka – before returning to the market square of Kazimierz Dolny.
