Zakopane
Hala Gąsienicowa lies in the Gąsienicowa Valley in the Polish Tatras, at about 1,500 metres above sea level. It is a broad former shepherds' meadow surrounded by dwarf pine, with views of Kościelec, Świnica and the ridges of the Orla Perć. Today it is one of the key trail junctions in this part of the mountains.
The name comes from the Gąsienica family of the Podhale region, which once owned the meadow. Sheep were grazed here until the 1960s; the land was then taken over by the national park and almost all the huts were dismantled. The slopes have gradually grown over with dwarf pine and forest.
The Murowaniec hut stands on the meadow, next to a meteorological station and the climbers' base known as Betlejemka. The approach follows the blue trail from Kuźnice via Boczań (about two hours) or the yellow one from Kasprowy Wierch (about an hour).
