A green valley in the middle of Bytom

The Bytomka Valley stretches along the Bytomka river on the border of the Bytom districts of Szombierki and Łagiewniki. The easiest approach is along Młyn Szombierski street, where you can leave the car by the allotment gardens and walk down a wooden boardwalk towards the water. This is post-mining land, turned after reclamation into an urban recreation area.

Traces of the mining past

The landscape is varied by the remains of spoil heaps, popular with quad riders, and by the old Ewa and Krystyna shafts. Their technical condition means they are best viewed from the outside only. The contrast between industrial relics and regained greenery is the most distinctive feature of this place.

Walks and wildlife

The tree-lined lanes suit walking, running and cycling, and an outdoor gym waits along the way. Observers have counted around a hundred bird species along the banks of the Bytomka, so binoculars come in handy. A golf course lies close to the valley.
