Wieś Topiłówka
The Rospuda Valley is a vast area of wet meadows, peat bogs and forests stretching along the Rospuda river within the Augustów Primeval Forest. It is regarded as the largest peatland valley in Poland preserved almost without traces of human interference. The area is protected under the Natura 2000 network and counted among the Green Lungs of Poland.
The river flows through a chain of ribbon lakes, among them Głębokie, Bakałarzewskie and Okrągłe, and spreads out between them into fens and alder carrs. Rare bog plants grow here, headed by the white adder's-mouth orchid, beavers, otters and bats live in the valley, and it serves as a migration corridor for wolves and deer.
A convenient option is the walking and cycling loop starting in the centre of Augustów, leading past the Holy Place of former pagan rituals, the remains of a magnate residence and the forests around Jaśki, Topiłówka and Mazurki. Keep to the marked paths — the ground beyond them can be boggy.
