Zakopane
Czarny Staw pod Rysami is a Tatra lake at about 1,583 metres above sea level, in the cirque above Morskie Oko. It owes its name to the dark colour of the water, deepened by the shadows cast by the surrounding walls. Rysy, Niżnie Rysy and the Mięguszowieckie Peaks tower above its surface.
The walk starts at Palenica Białczańska and follows a tarmac road for about eight kilometres to Morskie Oko, which takes roughly two and a half hours. Then you skirt Morskie Oko and climb stone steps — a short but tiring and steep stretch, impossible with a pushchair.
The full return trip is a whole-day outing, so an early start pays off. From the lake a green trail continues to the Przełęcz pod Chłopkiem pass and on to Rysy, the highest peak of the Polish Tatras. Parking spaces at Palenica Białczańska must be booked in advance; shuttle minibuses from Zakopane are an alternative.
