Zakopane
The brick robbers' chapel stands in the Kościeliska Valley, on the Stare Kościeliska clearing, right beside the green trail leading deeper into the valley. It is covered with a shingled roof, and above the entrance are crossed hammers — a miners' emblem — and the inscription Ave Maria. Wooden benches set up next to it invite a short rest.
Folk tradition ascribes the chapel to highland robbers, but in reality it was built by people connected with the former industry in the valley. An ironworks once operated at Stare Kościeliska, together with housing for its workers and an inn. Traces of that settlement are barely legible in the terrain today, and the chapel remains its best preserved relic.
The walk starts in Kiry, from where the green trail leads towards the mountain hut on Hala Ornak. The chapel is about 25 minutes away along a gentle, wide track on the valley floor, open to cyclists as well.
