Zakopane
Dolina Małej Łąki cuts into the Western Tatras at the foot of Giewont, within the boundaries of Zakopane. It is about 5.4 km long and the smallest main valley on the Polish side of the range. Fewer visitors come here than to the neighbouring Kościeliska or Chochołowska valleys, although the scenery is every bit as fine.
The yellow trail along the valley floor leads to Przysłop Miętusi and on towards Giewont. The natural goal of a shorter walk is Wielka Polana Małołącka — a broad clearing ringed by the walls of Wielka Turnia, Dziadek, Babka and Mały Giewont, with wooden benches for a rest. The trail is easy but stony: bring a carrier or sling rather than a pushchair.
The valley was grazed for centuries and a whole shepherds' settlement with huts once stood on the Great Meadow. Today the area belongs to Tatra National Park, an entry ticket is required and movement is limited to marked trails. A distinctive feature is the way surface water vanishes into the limestone bedrock.
