A hut right on the border

Jelenka is a small mountain hut in the eastern Karkonosze (Giant Mountains), on the Czech side of the ridge, only metres from the Polish border. It stands in the Hradec Králové Region, at a junction of trails arriving from Karpacz, Malá Úpa and Śnieżka. The open ground around the building gives a wide panorama of the range, with Śnieżka in full view.

Getting there

Two trails approach from the Polish side: the blue one from Przełęcz pod Śnieżką towards Przełęcz Okraj, and the red one from Śnieżka to Pomezní Boudy. From the Czech side a green trail links the hut with Śnieżka. The access road is closed to cars and the nearest car parks lie 2–4 km away.

What to expect

Jelenka works mainly as a stop on a longer ridge walk: you can get a hot meal, use the toilets and rest before moving on. It is open all year, including winter, when the approach calls for proper boots and extra time.
