A hut on the Otryt ridge

Chata Socjologa is a simple mountain refuge in the Bieszczady Mountains, set on the Otryt ridge above Lutowiska. The name commemorates Henryk Kliszko of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Warsaw, who initiated the construction carried out by students in the 1970s. After a fire in 2003 the hut was rebuilt by people connected with the original crew.

What to expect

Conditions are spartan: no electricity or running water, bunk sleeping in your own sleeping bag, evenings by the campfire and an oil lamp. The atmosphere is homely and guests get to know each other around a shared table. Besides lodging, the hut hosts academic and artistic workshops as well as intimate song and ballad concerts.

Access and surroundings

The shortest approach follows the green trail from Lutowiska towards Trochaniec. Walking the Otryt ridge opens up views of the San valley and the Bieszczady meadows. You cannot drive up to the hut itself — the last stretch is on foot, so it is worth limiting your luggage to a backpack.
