Łęknica
The Dawna Kopalnia Babina geotourism trail leads through the site of a former lignite opencast mine near Łęknica. The four-kilometre loop belongs to the Łuk Mużakowa (Muskau Arch) landscape park, one of the best preserved terminal moraines in Europe, distinguished with UNESCO Global Geopark status.
Along the route you pass erosion forms, outcrops of lignite seams and acid water springs. The strongest impression is made by the post-mining lakes – there are around one hundred and ten of them on the Polish side of the geopark, and their water takes on colours from brown and red to emerald and turquoise. The panorama of the pit, Łęknica and German Bad Muskau is seen from the Afryka observation tower.
The route can be covered on foot, by bike and in winter also on cross-country skis. The site was included in the Seven New Wonders of Poland list by National Geographic Traveler. The water in the lakes is strongly acidic and unsuitable for swimming.
