A nature trail on the Hel Peninsula

The Torfowe Kłyle reserve is one of the most interesting natural spots on the Hel Peninsula, situated on the edge of Jastarnia, right next to the belt of coastal dunes and forests. The name refers to former peat pits which gradually filled with water, creating a mosaic of small ponds, reed beds and wet meadows.

A nature trail about 1.9 km long runs across the reserve, equipped with information boards and a viewing tower. The route begins near Mickiewicza Street and ends at Polna Street.

What to see

The trail leads past three main stops. The first is the peat bog itself — a habitat of rare plants typical of coastal wetlands, including salt-tolerant species. The second is an extensive reed marsh where many bird species nest; in spring and early summer it is worth bringing binoculars. The third stop is Dąbrówka, a small patch of oak woodland, a remnant of the old oak and birch forests that once covered the peninsula.

Who it suits and how to explore it

A surfaced section leads as far as the viewing tower and can be ridden by bike. The rest of the route is harder, boggy in places and meant for walking only — it is not suitable for pushchairs. A leisurely walk takes about an hour and makes a good change from the beach for families.

Good to know

The reserve is a protected area: stay on the marked trail, do not step onto the bog and do not disturb the birds. The best time to visit is spring and summer, when the vegetation and bird life are at their richest. Jastarnia lies in the middle of the peninsula, so the trail is easy to combine with a visit to Hel, Jurata or Władysławowo.
